One of the toughest challenges for American teachers, however, is getting the right to work in the UK. It's much easier for citizens of commonwealth countries (like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) and you'll find that there are many more of these teachers in the UK for this reason alone.

It is not, however, impossible. It just takes a bit more work for an American to get clearance to teach in the United Kingdom.

EU passport
If you have a British passport, or a passport for any of the EU countries, then you can teach in the UK without a visa. To find out if you can get an EU passport, you'll need to look at your family ancestry & go from there. If one of your parents was born in the European Union, then simply look online at any search engine and find the High Commission or Embassy for that country and ask what you need to do. This can take months so start right away.

If you already have an EU passport, lucky you! You can work in England on that passport.

Work Permit
If you do not have an EU passport, your only other option is to try to obtain a position in which your employer will sponsor you. This means that you need to get a school to hire you directly and sponsor your visa.
